Source Parameters of the Shallow 2012 Brawley Earthquake , Imperial Valley

چکیده
Resolving earthquake parameters, especially depth, is difficult for events occurring within basins because of issues involved with separating source properties from propagational path effects. Here, we demonstrate some advantages of using a combination of teleseismic and regional waveform data to improve resolution following a bootstrapping approach. Local SS-S differential arrivals from a foreshock are used to determine a local layered model which can then be used to model teleseismic depth phases: pP, sP, and sS. Using the cut-and-paste (CAP) method for which all strike (θ), dip (δ), rake (λ), and depth variations are sampled for several crustal models. We find that regional data prove the most reliable at fixing the strike, whereas the depth is better constrained by teleseismic data. Weighted solutions indicate a nearly pure strike-slip mechanism (θ 59° 1°) with a centroid depth of about 4.0 km and an Mw of 5.4 for the mainshock of the 2012 Brawley earthquake. Complementary slip distributions of the largest earthquakes in the 2012 Brawley swarm, Imperial Valley, California
[1] We investigate the finite rupture processes of twoM> 5 earthquakes in the 2012 Brawley swarm by joint inversion of nearby strong motion and high-rate GPS data. Waveform inversions up to 3 Hz were made possible by using a small event (Mw3.9) for path calibration of the velocity structure. Our results indicate that the first (Mw5.3) event ruptured a strong, concentrated asperity with offsets ...

Long-period surface waves recorded on the north-south Pasadena strainmeter are used to determine the seismic moments and fault parameters of the 19 May 1940 Imperial Valley, California, the 16 December 1954 Dixie Valley and Fairview Peak, Nevada, and the 18 August 1959 Hebgen Lake, Montana, earthquakes. Synthetic strain seismograms are matched with the observed strainmeter seismograms. Source p...

Strong-motion displacements, recorded at 33 km (IVC) and 36 km (ELC) from the November 4, 1976 Brawley earthquake, are modeled using the CagniarddeHoop technique. The IVC record consists almost entirely of transversely polarized motion, whereas the ELC record contains an approximately equal proportion of transversely and radially polarized motion. A simplified shear-wave velocity model was dete...
متن کاملEvolution of seismicity near the southernmost terminus of the San Andreas Fault: Implications of recent earthquake clusters for earthquake risk in southern California
Three earthquake clusters that occurred in the direct vicinity of the southern terminus of the San Andreas Fault (SAF) in 2001, 2009, and 2016 raised significant concern regarding possible triggering of a major earthquake on the southern SAF, which has not ruptured in more than 320 years. These clusters of small and moderate earthquakes withM ≤ 4.8 added to an increase in seismicity rate in the...

[1] Radar interferometry (InSAR), field measurements and creepmeters reveal surface slip on multiple faults in the Imperial Valley triggered by the main shock of the 4 April 2010 El Mayor‐Cucapah Mw 7.2 earthquake. Co‐seismic offsets occurred on the San Andreas, Superstition Hills, Imperial, Elmore Ranch, Wienert, Coyote Creek, Elsinore, Yuha, and several minor faults near the town of Ocotillo ...
